João Lourenço has been President of Angola since 26 September 2017 and has chaired the MPLA party since 2018. He was the party's Secretary-General from 1998 to 2003, First Vice-President of the National Assembly from 2003 to 2014 and Minister of Defence from 2014 to 2017.[4]
